Get bids from two or three companies. You may be in a hurry to get your door fixed, but are you prepared to pay $500 to $1,000 for a $150? Getting multiple bids is the best way to avoid getting scammed. In most markets, a second bid alone will reveal a rip-off. You can get these bids quickly over the phone. But when the technician arrives, let him know that he must get your permission before exceeding the bid. Don’t be afraid to reject any proposed extra repairs. Beware of the repair specialist. Many unethical garage door companies intentionally target repair work because (1) customers are desperate for a quick fix and won’t get other bids, (2) customers don’t know the real cost of garage door parts, and (3) customers don’t know a necessary repair from a bogus one. If you get one bid from a company that focuses on repair, get another bid from a long-established company that does garage door sales and service. Check the company’s BBB Business Review at www.bbb.org. If a company has a bad rating from the BBB, call someone else. But be aware that some A+ ratings from the BBB don’t necessarily indicate a clean company. Some unethical firms have learned to get BBB complaints resolved quickly. A company may have hundreds of angry customers who never thought to file a complaint with the BBB. Be wary of phones answered generically, such as “Garage doors” or “Door service.” This tactic is used by slippery companies that operate under so many names that they can’t even answer their own phones honestly. If a company answers its phone strangely, ask them, “What company is this?” If they balk at this simple, honest question, hang up and call someone else. Beware of excessive advertising. The top position on Google or the first ad in the Yellow Pages does not necessarily indicate a reputable company. In some cases, heavy advertising can actually indicate a disreputable company. The business model of rip-off companies is built on excessive advertising that is designed to get their guy to be the first and only technician in your garage. Massive advertising expense is actually a key reason why some companies must charge high prices. Look closely at the ads for excessive appeals. Beware of promises of many discounts and low prices, same-day service, phony-looking reviews or testimonials, and especially unverifiable claims such as “5 star” or “rated #1.” And watch out for $29 service fees. We’ve seen many final invoices with a low $29 service fee, yet with the total bill exceeding $1,000 and packed with exorbitant parts prices and unnecessary repairs.

A garage door makeover can revolutionize the impression your home makes on onlookers. Clean, geometric lines can make a plain house look modern. Wood panels will emphasize a home's classic appeal, and windows help break up the monotony of a wide garage door. The style, color, material, and hardware of your garage doors should never be an afterthought. Here's how your garage door selection adds to your home's first impression.
Carriage House Steel Garage Doors
The original function of carriage houses may be obsolete, but the style remains a sophisticated element of country homes. The Carriage House Collection is designed to deliver rustic authenticity, without sacrificing modern durability and convenience. You can customize the color, hardware, and windows to best complement your home’s architectural nuances and bring this old-timey look to life.
Modern Aluminum Garage Doors
For some, the garage does more than protect cars and equipment from the elements. It functions as a work space. Aluminum and glass garage doors allow natural light to break through and illuminate the sacred space where you paint or perform vehicle repairs. Even if you don’t use this room as a project hub, you may simply enjoy the sleek lines of an aluminum garage door and the way it can completely modernize your home’s facade.
Thermacore® Insulated Steel Garage Doors
If you’re as much of a fan of efficiency as aesthetic value, you’ll appreciate both the look and performance of insulated steel. In order to keep your house efficient and allow your central heating and air system to do its job, you need to seal air leaks and stop heat transfer from the outdoors to the indoors and vice versa. Since garages are generally not climate-controlled, it’s important to insulate above and around the garage. Insulated steel protects your home from air flow and has a versatile look that meshes with almost any style of home.
Traditional Wood Garage Doors
These days, almost any garage door material can be fashioned to look like wood, from vinyl to fiberglass to steel. But for some homeowners, you just can’t beat the look of real, natural wood. While water damage is certainly a concern when it comes to using traditional wood in construction, these are sealed with a waterproof adhesive that allows you to enjoy your garage door, worry-free.
Windows Vs. No Windows On Your Garage Door
If you’ve never had a garage door with windows before, it may not have crossed your mind to add this feature. But windows here can be transformative, especially on a wide garage door that takes up a large section of your home’s facade. However, it’s important to go with your gut; depending on the style you’ve chosen, windows may actually dampen the effect of a beautiful design.
Playing With Paint
You may not think of a garage door as a place to play with color. But just like shutters and doors, a garage door can be a canvas that allows you to incorporate your unique tastes without having to make any architectural alterations.
Whether you’re going for luxurious, rustic, modern, or just uniquely “you,” a garage door can make or break your home from the very first glance.

Introducing OHD Anywhere™ Garage Door Opener App
Posted on March 9, 2016 by vwunder
Imagine the peace of mind and convenience that comes with being able to open or close your garage door from anywhere in the world. We're excited to introduce Overhead Door's new smart device enabled garage door controller: OHD Anywhere™. Never worry again about giving your garage pass code to anyone. With the use of OHD Anywhere™, it's as simple as opening the app on your smart device.
OHD Anywhere™ allows users to operate up to three garage doors from any location. The app is compatible with most Android and Apple mobile devices. The ability to monitor your garage from afar is not only convenient, but also sager than traditional monitoring methods. Door-mounted sensors monitor the position of the garage door rather than the operation of a garage door opener. Users will be alerted to any change in position of the garage door even if it's been disengaged from the opener.
OHD Anywhere™ works through the use of your home Wi-Fi® connection, and can be programmed for use on up to three doors per module (additional sensors are required if you have more than one door). The door module incorporates the low-power SimpleLink™ Wi-Fi CC3200 wireless MCU from Texas Instruments (TI)∗ which allows for users to securely operate their garage doors. OHD Anywhere™ can be used with most garage door openers produced after 1993.
OHD Anywhere™ operates via a free app that can be downloaded from your device's app store (iPhone users, and Android users for quick access to download).

Now that you've celebrated ringing in the New Year, join Overhead Door as we celebrate our 95th Anniversary! We're excited to kick-off 2016 and share with you the history, and founding of our company. This year, we will be sharing some of our historic contributions to the industry over these95 years on our blog. Today's post will focus on our founder, C.G. Johnson and two of his many contributions to the garage door industry.
In the early 1900's Henry Ford unveiled the Model T. This automobile was affordable, reliable, and had country roads and small towns in mind. The cost of the Model T mad it affordable for the majority of the population. This boom in the automobile industry led several other car makers to start producing affordable cars, which made for even more car owners. With so many Americans now on the road they needed a place to store their newly purchased vehicles!
Carriage houses, originally meant to house horses and the carriages they led, had a new addition: the automobile. Eventually, carriage house were phased out as more and more people purchased vehicles, and were replaced with garages. Early garages had side opening panel doors which worked, but not in the most convenient manner. Seeing that these doors required double the amount of space to open, C.G. Johnson had an idea. In 1921 Johnson patented a sectional overhead door, and with that idea, a corporation was born.
June means longer days and more outdoor activity in and around the house. It’s important for homeowners to keep their families safe while working around the largest entry point of the home – the garage. June has been designated Garage Door Safety Month by the International Door Association (IDA) and the Door & Access System (DASMA).
The garage door is often the largest moving object and most-used entry point of a home, which is why it’s important for homeowners to keep their garage doors and automatic opener systems in proper working condition.
Below are some industry tips and advice on how to keep your garage door and its opener working properly, and avoid accidents:
- Make sure the garage door opener control button is out of the reach of children and their small fingers and do not let them play with garage door remote controls.
- Never place fingers between door sections. Consider pinch-resistant door panels to help prevent accidents.
- Visually inspect the garage door for wear and tear. Pay particular attention to springs, cables, rollers and pulleys. Do not attempt to remove, adjust or repair these parts or anything attached to them. These parts are under high tension and should only be fixed by a trained garage door professional.
- Test the reversing mechanism by placing a 2-inch by 4-inch board in the door’s path. If the door does not reverse after contacting the object, call a qualified garage door professional for repair. If the opener has not been replaced since 1993, replace the garage door opener with a new one that has safety beams and auto-reverse as a standard feature.
- While on vacation, unplug the garage door opener unit or use the vacation lock security switch on the wall console, which renders remotes unusable and is an optional accessory to most openers.
- Do not leave the garage door partially open. When activated again, it may travel downward and come in contact with an object in its path. This also compromises a home’s security.

Earlier this month we introduced a new design in our popular Thermacore® Collection. The Model 192 V10 allows local Ribbon distributors to remain competitive with another garage door solution, expanding our industry offerings.
The Model 192 V10 embossment comes in the existing Thermacore Collection colors and finishes and is available with the wind load offerings within the current 190 series. The wainscoting design is a centuries-old marriage of form and style, adding an upscale look at an affordable price.
With five designs, nine colors and two finishes, and a variety of window styles, the Model 192 V10 is everything a homeowner could want in a door. The new long panel design allows another choice for our distributors to offer customers, keeping them competitive in the industry.
A garage door can enhance the overall look and feel of a home, and homeowners can be confident when outfitting their home with a Thermacore insulated steel garage door. Specifically designed to reduce air filtration, Thermacore doors can help maintain thermal efficiency in both hot and cold weather climates.
